Perfectionism, Gestalt Psychology, and Grass Roots Organising in the Credit Crunch – Reflections on Four Years of Getting Things Done at Morgan Stanley

.
Biography

As an executive director at Morgan Stanley University and enthusiastic GTD champion, I made GTD part of the standard curriculum for new employees. At the same time, I was evolving and optimising my own systems. I’ll share a brief travelogue of this GTD journey – the ups, downs, cautionary tales and (hopefully) sage advice. What’s important to consider when getting GTD to bed-in in big companies? Does GTD translate into global cultures? How did my own GTD thinking inform what happened in the wider organisation?

Frode Odegard:
Confessions of an Entrepreneur and GTD Black Belt: Results from Chaos

.
In this talk I will discuss GTD from the perspective of a serial entrepreneur, someone who is much better at starting new things than he is at finishing them.  I will explain why the human mind needs an external, trusted system for improving productivity, perspective, and control. These days almost all of us are leading lives with complexities we can’t easily avoid, so we have to find better ways to handle them.

I will cover the key aspects of GTD – managing your workflow, keeping perspective with multiple horizons of focus, and conducting regular reviews to maintain perspective and control. I will also discuss my own motivation for getting started with GTD, how I did it, and what my life is like now. Finally, I will include some lessons learned that should be useful for those just starting out as well as for more advanced practitioners.
